Celebrating family caregivers

In honor of National Family Caregiver Month, the Bexar County Family Caregiver Support Coalition is sponsoring a Family Caregiver Conference on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Caregivers of seniors, children or adults with a disability, and wounded warriors are invited to participate in this event that offers free seminars, luncheon and a keynote speaker.

Come enjoy vendor exhibits, educational sessions, door prizes, and chair and hand massages. Discover the many caregiver resources available in the community. On-site respite is also available.

Location: TriPoint Grantham Center (corner of St. Mary’s St. and Hwy. 281)

22nd Annual San Fernando Health & Safety Fair

Free this Saturday, Oct. 6?

San Fernando Cathedral will be hosting their 22nd Annual Health & Safety Fair from 8am to 1pm on the Cathedral grounds (115 Main Plaza).

There will be free screenings for everything from blood pressure and body mass index to cholesterol and diabetes. Health information regarding podiatry, dermatology, vision and more will be available. Doctors will also be available for consultations. This event in open to the public.

What can I do about caregiver stress?

The WellMed Charitable Foundation, as a member of the Bexar County Family Caregiver Support Coalition, is sponsoring a free training session for non-professional family caregivers on Wednesday, September 26, 2012.

Come learn about services, programs, and resources available to family caregivers including: the Caregiver TeleConnection, Caregiver SOS Community Resource Centers, Signals Monthly Newsletter, the Caregiver SOS website, and others. Share your experiences, learn from other caregivers and discover what you can do about caregiver stress.

OASIS Tutoring: Changing lives

Would you like to make a difference in the life of a child who is struggling to read?

We are seeking adults age 50 and over to work one-on-one with a child in first, second or third grade for one hour a week to improve reading skills and build self-esteem.

We are holding a tutor information session on August 15 at 10:00 AM at our main location, OASIS at Morningside. Tutor training classes will be held on August 22 & 23 from 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM at the same location. No prior teaching experience is necessary.

Do something fun and meaningful! Become an OASIS tutor and read to a child in an elementary school near you.
